IAS is carried out for the selection of Indian Administrative Service Officers. IAS Exam Pattern discusses question distribution, marking schemes, sectional weighting, and duration. In all three IAS levels the description is:

  • IAS Preliminary Exam: It has two objective type papers and carries a maximum of 400 marks. The preliminary examination features two papers. Paper-II (CSAT) in the IAS exam is of a qualifying type and candidates in this paper will score at least 33 percent to qualify for the next stage of the IAS exam i.e. the Mains.
  • IAS Main Exam: There are two types of papers- Qualifying Papers and Merit Papers to be counted. The former will consist of two language exams, one choosing the candidate and another English. The latter will consist of 9 papers including 7 papers on merit and 2 papers on qualifying languages. The main examination will consist of written essays as well as questions of objective type. The sum of all papers and the score secured during the interview round will be used for the candidate’s ranking.
  • IAS Personality Test: An interview of the candidates qualified in the Main Exam would be taken from 275 Marks. This will include the psychometric test, the assessment test, and the personal interview. The marks obtained in the test would be added to the definitive merit list declaration calculation.

Exam Pattern

  1. The IAS prelims stage consists of 2 mandatory papers- General Ability Test (GAT) and the Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). That will test the candidates’ analytical skills.
  2. All questions, in nature, are objective. Candidates are required to select any of the 4 choices of answers given for each question.
  3. Questions are set out in both English and Hindi. Nevertheless, questions relating to class 10th level English Language Comprehension skills are only tested through a passage from English without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
  4. IAS Prelims is an eligibility examination. To qualify for the Mains, candidates need to get a minimum of 33 percent.

Marking Scheme

  1. In the General Studies paper, each question carries 2 marks.
  2. Every question in the Aptitude Test paper for the civil service carries 2.5 marks.
  3. For any question for which the candidate has given an incorrect answer, one-third (0.33) of the marks allocated to that question will be deducted as a penalty.
  4. If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be viewed as an incorrect answer even though one of the answers given is correct and the penalty for that question will be the same as above.
  5. If a question is left blank, i.e. the candidate does not give an answer, there will be no penalty for that question.

IAS Pattern for Mains Exam

  1. IAS Mains is likewise an offline examination. Every paper is to bear 250 marks.
  2. Every paper is 3 hours in length. Blind students are given 30 minutes in extra.
  3. The review is to contain 9 documents. A candidate will be tested on the basis of his / her knowledge of the subject
  4. Questions are in nature going to be subjective. They are given in both the Hindi language and the English language.
  5. In addition, IAS Mains is divided into two Types-Qualifying Exam and Merit Exam. Appearing in both is mandatory.

Marking Scheme

  1. Mains Examination total marks 1750 marks.
  2. Candidates will be graded based on opinion, content flow, understanding of the problems/situation, offering feasible solutions/strategies, presentation, and language.
  3. Candidates can select two optional papers they’ll be questioned on.
